Two years ago, I started working with a business coach Ryan Levesque to improve my skills and launch Rocket to Retail. Yes, no one can truly do it alone. Recently, during one of our calls, he said something that resonated with me, “Trust is the biggest currency in business today.”
With AI, cancel culture, and everything being so public, we’ve become suspicious of what’s real and what isn’t. As a result, whether intentional or not, we’ve become more guarded than ever.
Two weeks ago, I decided to go back to college and take a continuing education class. I enrolled in a digital marketing course at UVA—Go Hoos!—and over the next 10 weeks, I’ll be sharing my journey with you.
On the first day, we were asked to introduce ourselves and explain why we were taking the class. I was blown away by what some of the entrepreneurs in the group shared. Many had been in business for years, hired marketing agencies and consultants, but had seen little to no success. They had spent heaps of money without a return on investment, so they decided to take matters into their own hands and enrolled in the course.
As a consultant and marketing strategist, this saddened me. I was disappointed that they had been let down by their agencies, that the experience promised to them wasn’t delivered, and now, they must take on even more work by learning a skill that might be far from their natural strengths and unique brilliance.
I believe my business coach is right; trust IS the biggest currency in business. It always has been, but today, we have no choice but to acknowledge it. My goal is to never waste this currency—whether with my colleagues, future clients, friends, or family. Trust and truth are difficult. Many claim they want them but aren’t always ready to handle them. I promise to always speak my truth and deliver what I say I will.
Now, as solopreneurs or corporate employees, I'm curious how this culture of distrust has changed your conversations, hiring processes, and how you work.
